Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" level.

Extremely High Pollution Levels

Multiple areas of the capital registered an pollution measurement above 500, which represents 10x the healthy limit set by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable levels.

Fireworks Ban and New Developments

Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the metropolis as the cold season approaches.

Yet recently, the newly elected regional administration petitioned the supreme court to request a modification of the ban.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a compromise between "heritage and environment".

Legal Verdict and Reality

Despite concerns of environmental and health activists, judges complied with the request, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific periods throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was extensive disregard of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital registered pollution peaking around the night hours to the most severe readings observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Effects

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming declining air quality in Lahore on contaminants originating in across the border following the festivities.

Persistent Pollution Issue

Extremely elevated levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Near the festival period, the concentration of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the worst records ever documented in China's capital, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Multiple Pollution Contributors

The situation in the city is resulting from a convergence of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, building projects, waste incineration and smoke from agricultural fires in adjacent regions of farming communities.

Within these states, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing hazardous pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as winter air descends.

Health and Financial Consequences

Public health and economic consequences on the approximately 33 million residents residing in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple studies.

These hazardous conditions leads to elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can potentially cause cancer.

The pollution is calculated to be responsible for approximately 10k early mortalities per year in the city.
